What are the main benefits?

At a lower cost than expanding highways, complete Level 5 (no driving), electric, congestion-free, 100 mph personal travel, eliminating the biggest contributor to global warming—not by forcing EVs, but by providing overwhelming consumer benefits. Emerging countries, people living in high-rise buildings, and others can enjoy GoBFree now, not in 50 years after spending trillions of dollars to upgrade their entire electric grid, since the rail is the charger.

What is the current state of development?

We have worked with dozens of engineers over the years to build several prototypes and a short piece of track, and have completed numerous studies, including an independent, year-long Texas A&M research program on all aspects of the technology. Additional funds will be used to build about ¾ mile of elevated track. Our goal is to safely and reliably hurtle a lighter-weight electric car along the track at 100 mph.

Why build this expensive track when we will soon have autonomous freight, EVs, and Robotaxis?

Autonomous vehicles struggle in unusual situations. At high speeds, that can be deadly. Our vision is for autonomous cars, freight, and taxis to operate in already-proven, low-speed, traffic-free local areas, then leapfrog onto the elevated rail at 100 mph to another local area.

GoBFree is perfect for delivering smaller autonomous freight pods from warehouse districts into central cities and for the low-speed urban taxis being developed by Zoox and Glydways. By connecting to our elevated rail, they can become a metropolitan-wide transportation system, providing door-to-door private chauffeur service.

Autonomous vehicles do nothing to save you from sitting in traffic. They will actually make traffic worse because they increase the spacing between vehicles compared with human drivers.

The track is expensive. How can you afford it?

The track is expensive, but so are the benefits of hands-free, congestion-free, high-speed travel. Millions of commuters in LA, NYC, and major cities around the world will never again spend hundreds of hours in traffic. Drivers' wasted time, car operating expenses, and purchase price add up to $1.30 to $1.80 per mile. We can profitably operate the system by charging a toll of about ⅓ of that cost.

Because the track is elevated, it can be built next to highways or above railroad tracks without acquiring additional right-of-way, making it much less expensive than widening existing roadways. Because the 32-foot-wide, four-parallel-track system has so much capacity, the cost of GoBFree track infrastructure per vehicle is estimated to be less than ⅕ the cost of expanding highway infrastructure per vehicle.

Where do you think the track will be built?

Congested urban areas with above-average incomes and high traffic volumes present the best opportunities. In the U.S., potential routes include Riverside to Los Angeles, Southern Connecticut or Northern New Jersey to NYC, Baltimore to Washington, D.C., and Chicago. Internationally, New Delhi, with its 28 million residents facing severe traffic and pollution; Beijing, where drivers avoid highways between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. due to gridlock; Jakarta, with its challenging river deltas; Mexico City; and many others.

In developing countries, it will be a century before adequate electric grids are in place to support home charging for electric vehicles. Because the GoBFree track recharges the batteries, we eliminate the need to upgrade the entire electric grid, allowing us to build the systems now. This is critical, as it is projected that 70% of global warming emissions will come from developing countries by 2050.

How does this compare with Elon Musk’s efforts?

Elon Musk recognizes the benefits of hands-free driving, congestion avoidance, and the environmental need for electric transportation; this is why his Boring Company is digging tunnels and why he is committed to Full Self-Driving. Our project achieves these goals at a much lower cost and with greater flexibility. Other benefits of GoBFree over the Boring Company include full Level 5 self-driving and automatic battery recharging.

What happens if I encounter an emergency on the track?

The track features entrance and exit ramps similar to current highways. In a serious emergency, you can direct your vehicle to the nearest police station or hospital.

This idea of dual-mode transportation has been discussed before. How is this different?

Previous dual-mode projects focused primarily on high costs without adequately quantifying the much greater benefits. Efforts by Elon Musk, Cruise, and Waymo have helped the public appreciate the advantages of fully autonomous driving. The Boring Company created awareness that sitting in traffic congestion will not consume our future.

Is GoBFree technology patented?
